Summer Reading Initiative
Early Readers. Future Leaders: Pinellas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading kicked off a summer reading initiative by reading to children and giving them books.
The Early Readers Future Leaders Campaign for Grade Level Reading has been busy this summer…giving new books to about 5,000 children.
The effort kicked off on Summer Learning Day earlier in the summer with JWB staff reading to children at three early learning centers. Each child was allowed to choose a brand new book to keep for free. Since then, we have visited Neighborhood Family Centers, back to school fairs and summer break spots giving each child a new book.
Research shows that proficiency by the third grade enables students to shift from learning to read to reading to learn, so that they can master more complex subject matter as they advance through school. Children who are not reading at grade level by 3rd grade are four times more likely to not graduate high school.
The Early Readers Future Leaders campaign aims to improve reading proficiency by addressing some of the issues that affect reading skills, such as school readiness, chronic school absence, summer learning loss and parent engagement.
Every child that has received a book from the campaign has also received a bookmark with tips for parents that will help them make the most of their time reading to their children.
In the coming months, children who participate in JWB funded home-visiting and residential programs will also get books.
The books were selected to include all skill-levels of reading and to appeal to a wide range of cultural backgrounds and interests.
